Black and white image: A Haunting Stillness.

a haunting stillness

The chair is still warm, but the spine has given up.

Sit quietly and watch the room divide itself into lines. One slice for the curtain. One slice for the dress. One slice for the things you forgot to say before the static took the jaw.

Her hands are still folded neatly in her lap. Patient. Obedient.

They are waiting for the rest of her to return from the ceiling. But the smoke is already in the wood paneling. The pattern is repeating.

Do not blink. If you look away, the lines will shift, and you will be the one left sitting in an empty room, wondering who used to own your clothes.

curator’s commentary

In this destabilizing monochromatic portrait, the composition examines themes of domestic alienation, temporal fracturing, and the unraveling of memory. Set against a rigid backdrop of vertical wood paneling and patterned drapery, a seated figure becomes the site of an aggressive physical dissolve. The head and torso are violently distorted, transforming into a vaporous, kinetic plume that bleeds upward into the negative space of the room.

The primary conceptual tension rests in the stark stillness of the hands, which remain sharply defined and folded in the lap while the rest of the identity disintegrates into abstraction. Severe horizontal fractures cut across the canvas, interrupting the domestic scene and functioning as structural shears across the surface. This striking interplay between the domestic environment and the physical corruption of the plane strips the portrait of comfort, rendering it a severe visual metaphor for psychological dissociation and total erasure.
